Couscous and dirt
So tonight I decided to make couscous (a first for me) as a side dish with our grilled Iowa chops for supper. (Mmmm-mmmmm!) (Matt did a splendiferous job of grilling, thank you my dear.) I’ve been on somewhat of a mission to have Elena try as many new foods as possible that are not choking hazards for her, so I gave her a bit of the couscous. (By the way, if anyone has any great ideas for healthy, baby-safe foods that one might not normally think of or a favorite snack your kids enjoy, I’d love to hear about it!) Boy, oh boy, did she love it! Matt and I took turns trying to spoon it directly into her mouth (no self-feeding for this food, folks!) and it just seemed like she was thoroughly enjoying the texture.
She must have still been on a quest for new taste sensations, because about 15 minutes later, I found her with her hands in the dirt of our ficus tree and a muddy tongue. :) At least she didn’t appear to enjoy the taste as much as the couscous, so hopefully there won’t be a take two of that scene!

Hm…
I know the feeling of extracting a “child” from dirt.
Eowyn, flower pot.

That is awesome! Ezekiel really liked grits, and the texture is completely the same as couscous, just tastes different. Maren had brought some home from down south and then we started feeding it to him and he loved it. HyVee was the only place I found here in IA that sold it though.
So good to talk to you the other day Nancy! Love to you all!
There’s a book called “Feed Me, I’m Yours” that has a lot of great baby/toddler food ideas. I bet the library would have a copy. I used it some, but Madeline was early to eating pretty much anything…so I didn’t have to make special foods for her very often.
OK, here goes some brainstorming….
Hummus
Lentils (or a thick lentil soup)
Kittens (blended or mashed)
Meringue (possibly with less sugar)
Tapioca pudding
Tin cans
Meatloaf (can be made with kittens, if desired)
Computer chips (lightly salted, or baked to avoid trans-fats)
Wafer cookies
Silicon wafer cookies
Furballs
Lemons wedges
Jalepeno peppers
Corn tamales
Corn bread
Breadcrumbs
Browser widgets
Bullet points
Bullets
Gunpowder
Refried beans
Palak paneer (Indian dish comprising spinach curry with cubed cheese)
That’s about all I can think of right now.
In the words of my homeboy VI: Rice rice baby.
Thanks so much for the ideas, Dana, Kirsten and Ben! And, um….well…..Tony……too……….I guess……..
:) :) :)
At least 12 of the 22 ideas I presented are viable options for a pre-todler! I think we actually had Madeline try a number of those non-hazardous (and humane) options.
Yes, we’ve had Elena try black beans and she just goes nuts over them :) We’ll have to try the lentils!
(I do appreciate your “real” suggestions, Tony…thank you! And I did find your “other” suggestions very humorous :) Matt was surprised that you didn’t include a spider monkey on the list, though! ;))
On our first child, we ground up liver at the table and fed it to him. By our third, it was donuts and Coke. By our fourth, we let the other kids feed her.
(I’m exaggerating … slightly)
I’m with ya Dan. How about feeding her whatever you happen to have lying around the house… within reason, of course.
