Katrina Broke My Heart
It’s been an intersting weekend. I have been grieving over New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast that has been decimated by the hurricane.
I have also been very challenged by a post by chad called “I’m not willing to go”.
Can you imagine moving to New Orleans right now? Of you course you can’t and neither can I. But if you think about it, that’s what Jesus did when he came down to live amongst us.
So I’m going.
That’s right. At 1pm on Wednesday, barring unforseen circumstances, Nancy, myself (and about 20 other Rock‘ers) are headed down to Shreveport LA (15 of us going to Shreveport, 5 others headed to Baton Rouge with a crew from Mars Hill in Iowa City) to help with relief efforts. Working with local churches, we will be assisting with setting up shelters and helping to comfort the displaced.
It’s not New Orleans, but it’s as close as we can get right now.
Please Pray, if you’re the praying type.

matt, are you guys just heading down or are you coordinating with someone down there? i am working on trying to find some people who would be able to head down from our church…what’s the plan? how’s it working? let us know…
Lacking good words of my own, my mind falls to. what I was once told is, an old Egyptian Blessing…
May god stand between you ad harm in all the dark places where you must walk…
Good Luck.
I have the same question as Todd, Matt.
Do you have a contact you’re working with? Our church is sending money to the Salvation Army, but we also are interested in sending a team down.
My QT verse Friday, and one that we’re striving to apply is I John 3:17-18 — “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
That is so great Matt! Our church is sending down folks too. We will be praying for you all!
To be honest, I’m third hand info here. But basically Mars Hill Church (www.marshill.cc) in Iowa City (a daughter church of Stonebrook/The Rock) started cold calling churches in Baton Rouge and Shreveport looking for opportunities. Dan Bovenmeyer is the main coordinator. That is how we got hooked up.
Additionally, we will be working with Samaritan’s purse as cleanup efforts continue throughout the fall.
I heard a story about Mother Teresa the other day. Somone once asked her, considering all the suffering that exists in the world, if whether she ever felt her work serving the destitute and the dying was only a drop in the bucket. She said and later wrote, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”
