Emerging Hope: Jimmy Long
Several Rock leaders have been reading Emerging Hope by Jimmy Long. It is a book about the “Emerging Culture” (Generation X and the Millennial Generation (Gen Y)). The book describes the characteristics of these two postmodern generations, and the cultural events that contributed to their advent. The book also proposes that not only are we experiencing a shift in generations, but that we are currently undergoing a cultural transition on the level of the transition from the Dark Ages to the Enlightenment. We are heading into an era that will be vastly different in attitudes, outlook, and perception of reality than our forbearers.
The reason he wrote the book was not to simply give us a history of this culture shift, but also to describe that shift’s implications for ministry.
I highly recommend that anyone who is serious about reaching this “Emerging” generation with Christ’s message read this book. This blog will probably be commenting on it for the next few weeks as I digest and process Mr. Long’s thoughts.

Also, you will notice that the cover is bright orange. (The new black.)
LOL!
So… I never herad of the book before 5 minutes ago… I’m guessing that the “generational transition” you’re talking about is how more of the young population is more “fundy” and “moral” etc.??? Tho you didn’t say, that does seem the logical infferance.
Let me just say that if he thinks this transition is as big as the enlightenment, he is someone whose writings you should take with a grain of salt. The enlightenment changed the entire world in big ways… the generation he’s talking about is pretty much only in the U.S.
I’m not saying that his message is bad… becuase the culture shift is quite significant and worthy of study… but the enlightenment… THE Enlightenment… come on…
Dave,
Perhaps you should give the book a read and see what you think. I’d be interested in your opinion.
And actually, it is not HIS opinion that we are in a cultural shift on the level of THE ENLIGHTENMENT, he is reporting the current views of social scientists.
And no, it is not about the next generation being more “fundy” and “moral”. Far from it. The “Emerging Hope” title is about how to give hope to this emerging generation, which is far more cynical about life than their forbearers.
Stay tuned as I’ll post thoughts from the book and my reactions to it.
And yes, THE Enlightenment.
is this jimmy long the same jimmy long from the “electric prunes”?
