I find that the reason I am most likely to avoid people of other religions is because I already can’t keep up with the people I am currently friends with. Why would I invest a lot of time an energy into someone who disagrees with me on the very meaning and purpose of life to the exclusion of someone I will spend eternity with? How can I change this in my life?
Wendy – maybe by realizing that you will be spending eternity with those folks, and others that you are disregarding because they think differently than you may very well be on their way to an eternity in Hell. Let that break your heart.
We have the gift of freedom from slavery to sin and death. We have the gift of eternal life (or rather, will have…). We know the mystery that brings this freedom. We have a responsibility to share that news with those who don’t know it.
I agree that if we live our life the way Mr. Keller explains it then it will cause division and war. However, Jesus has called us to something greater. As Matt said we have the responsibility to share the good news with others. We are also called to be in the world but not of the world. We are called to love our enemies, to return good for evil. In light of this we can say we have the answer and not take the path Mr. Keller mentions, the path that will lead to war and oppression. Each of us needs to ask God ‘How ought I to live in order to please God?’ Let’s help one another in this endeavor.
It reminds me of Brad’s teaching Sun. about loving those in the church. We need to continue to strive to understand God’s love for us so that we can love others.
Yeah… some other things I think it contributes to is less desire to be innovative. I mean I would think that Christians are probably better at what they apply themselves to, but most do just enough to get by in their jobs so they may focus on ministry.
Additionally I’ve noticed a number of atheists use the argument that they are smarter because more of them have obtained degrees and higher education. However, I believe this isn’t because of Christians lack intelligence, but rather the fear/avoidance of secularization effects.
I’m not sure these are avoidable in a world like ours. I do believe that most of these things can be reversed if we learn to trust in God’s ability to keep us “untainted”.

Brilliant and convicting. I can think of a thousand ways we do this all the time. Lord have mercy on us!

There is a lot to think about in that 1:40 explanation. very powerful.

That seems true on many levels…
