Best Songs Ever

Q Magazine Just came out with their 1001 Best songs ever recorded. While I think this is a rediculous idea to even try to attempt, I guess it is always intersting to see someone’s opinion. The list is about as rediculous as Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums of all time… but here’s the top 10.

  1. U2 - One
  2. Aretha Franklin - I Say a Little Prayer
  3. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
  4. The Beatles - A Day in the Life
  5. Elvis Presley - In the Ghetto
  6. Eminem - My Name Is
  7. Radiohead - Creep
  8. Destiny’s Child - Independent Women
  9. Oasis - Live Forever
  10. Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep Mountain High

As this is a matter of extreme opinion (Destiny’s Child????) I would like to hear what you believe to be the top 10 best recordings of all time.

This is silly. Apparently the 10 best songs ever recorded all happened to be written after 1950 and all happened to be popular tunes (as opposed to, say, Beethoven). But I’ll toss in my 2 cents and give the Top 5 (in honor of High Fidelity) best Rock songs ever (as of right now, anyway). In no particular order:

-Rolling Stones - Satisfaction; Undeniably catchy, nasty, and revolutionary.
-Beatles - A Day in the Life; I’ll give ‘em this one, though there’s a lot of stiff competition.
-Van Halen - Eruption/You Really Got Me; this may seem cliched now, but it completely changed the sound of rock music. This came out when disco was popular, for crying out loud.
-Cream - Sunshine of Your Love; The precursor to all things metal, and credit must be given to clapton for the revolutionary guitar work.
-Third Eye Blind - Jumper; OK, just kidding. The last one will go to U2 for With Or Without You. This song hit #1 (as opposed to One, which peaked at #7) at a time when Flock of Seagulls owned the charts, and is a defining moment for the band.

These are all easy choices, and each one could easily be booted off the list. There are alot of things I didn’t include, too (Hendrix and Dylan, for starters). However, I think that putting any one of these songs next to, say, Eminem or Oasis, shows Q magazines list for what it is: rIdiculous.

I’m certainly no musical expert, so I will try my hand at the best songs of my lifetime if not the last few years. I agree with Q mag that One is the best song ever.

    1. One, U2
    2. A Blessing And A Curse, Harry Connick, Jr.
    3. Just The Way You Look Tonight, Frank Sinatra
    4. Sweet Child Of Mine, Guns n Roses
    5. Fields Of Gold, Sting
    6. With Or Without You, U2
    7. Daughter, Pearl Jam
    8. Start Me Up, Rolling Stones
    9. End Of The World As We Know It, R.E.M.
10.New York, New York, Frank Sinatra
(In honor of the greatest city on Earth.)

I am 17 and my favourite songs include a lot of recent stuff, however when choosing the best songs ever you can’t always choose the ones you listen to the most, you have to be a bit more open minded. Although i very rarely listen to bands like U2, a song which has got to be in the top 10 best songs is “with or without you” by U2. nobody can argue with that.
