<description>" "We're strong as a nation because of our diversity," she said. "

I will ignore the main topic and just take umbrage with this comment. In spite of what the University of Michigan, Supreme Court, and others may say, diversity, in and of itself, has absolutely no benefit. The West Bank is pretty darn diverse, but all the tend to do is blow each other up. I blame Bill Clinton for the start of this myth: he, along with others, refuses to acknowledge that this country is great because of the PEOPLE. Individuals who rely on their hard work and God given abilities, not the government, to succeed are what makes the United States a great place. It is a diverse country simply because everyone is given that opportunity, regardless of their race, beliefs, etc. Diversity is the result, not the cause, of this country's greatness. (Side note: trial lawyers and whiners also can lay very little claim to this greatness, perhaps Ms. Simpson should consider that).
Finally, I hate to drag the actual Constitution into an argument about the First Amendment, but sometimes it's necessary, I suppose. I quote: "CONGRESS shall make no law respecting an ESTABLISHMENT of religion, or prohibiting the FREE EXERCISE thereof..." (EMPHASIS added by moi). Congress has made no law regarding Wiccans. Ms. Simpson, furthermore has freedom to exercise her religious beliefs. Likewise, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors has the right to tell her to take a long walk off a short pier, if they so desire. If they allowed a person from EVERY religion but Wicca to pray before the meeting, she might have a case, but as it is, there is very little argument that she is being specifically discriminated against. Maybe Ms. Simposn should take her lawyer on that long walk, too...</description>
