Adblock and MySpace

MySpace Sucks

Last week I cancelled my MySpace account because I was tired of looking at mostly naked women, and essentially the site is useless to me. I have my own blog, I know who and where other people are, and meeting random folks via the Internet really isn’t that interesting to me. Besides which MySpace is a programming atrocity, kludgy as all get out to use and basically, a terrible example of good Web design. Purevolume, on the other hand, is amazing.

AdBlock Rules

In the many comments to my post about cancelling MySpace, the 8th(ish) most popular Web site on the Web, AdBlock was brought up as a safety mechanism for this site. Adblock is wonderful. Essentially it allows you to right click on advertisements and make them disappear, for good. In order to use this, you need Firefox.

If you are not using Firefox yet, WHY NOT? What is the reason (besides laziness) for sticking with IE, a browser that actually compromises the security of your computer? (Note to Safari users, I’m not talking about you. Or Camino users, or Opera, or Konqueror). Worried about your bookmarks? Firefox imports them, don’t worry.

Step 1: Get Firefox Step 2: Get Adblock

The Rock on MySpace

Several of you were confused then, when I signed The Rock up for a MySpace account. Why did I do it? For the same reasons that I would have a MySpace account if I were a band. Millions of people (including thousands at Iowa State U) are on MySpace. This is a great marketing opportunity. Avoiding using it would be like avoiding posting posters for The Rock in the bars when we have the opportunity to do so. Those are my basic reasons. If you read the article that I linked to in my post about cancelling my MySpace account, you will see that xxxChurch does the same thing. They agree with filters blocking MySpace, and often times flag it in X3Watch, yet they have a MySpace for xxxchurch. It’s good advertising. Not inherently evil, just can be stumbling if you struggle with such things.

pure volume is a much better site. Ok, well I don’t really know anything about web design, I just know pure volume is a lot more aesthetically pleasing.

and yes, firefox is amazing. I used adblock to totally get rid of ads on my hotmail inbox page, simply amazing.
