Garage Band Isn’t For Sermons

Pat Sokoll gave an amazing, stirring, and challenging… challenge… to the Rock leaders last tuesday.

An hour before it was supposed to start, I was charged with figuring out how to record it. So I gathered my laptop, Firepod, and the Rock’s Shure wireless lapel mic, thinking I would be just fine. I’d plug the wireless lapel mic into the Firepod, plug the Firepod into my laptop, and record with a sweet little program called Audacity. It’s been done a hundred times.

Well I get there and realize that I don’t have Audacity on my laptop, so, scramblng to figure out what app to use to record the message, I land on Garageband (the only audio recording app i have on my laptop.)

Either because I had some settings wrong, or due to the limitations of Garageband, it stopped recording somewhere in the middle of Pat’s message. Because I was deeply enthralled by what he was saying, I didn’t notice this. I’m not sure how much I missed. But I have a chunk at the beginning and a chunk at the end recorded.

My apologies to everyone involved in the Epic program, or anyone hoping to catch what Pat had to say via mp3. I’m working on piecing it together, but it’s not the whole thing.

The moral of the story is two-fold: 1) Physically COME to all of the Epic teachings and take good notes. 2) Pay attention to what you’re doing when you are charged with recording something.

despite the fact that its a Microsoft product, you might be suprised to know that MS Word actually has a recording feature in it now when you use the “notes view.” i am not sure if you have that on your machine but i am only assuming you do…

    it works rather well actually.

[...] Pat Sokoll traveled from Iowa City to share with us a challenging message. Unfortunately, I failed in my task to record his entire message and instead have two clips of him speaking. I am going to try to splice those and contextualize them as best I can, but for now, I thought that those of us who were there could post our notes and thoughts on the message here. [...]

if you ever need to use garageband again, just set your tempo to 40bpm and you will be ok.
