Heroes
Who are your heroes? Who is it that you look up to, aspire to have a heart/mind/vision/conviction/passion similar to?
One of my heroes is Rich Mullins. This man had a passion for knowing God and walking with Jesus, and he wore it on his sleeve. He was also an incredible artist, and gifted musician (do you know ANYONE else who can play hammer dulcimer?). His songs inspire me to worship, his music helps me to connect with the Lord when I am having a dry spell, and his lyrics convict me with profound truth of the human condition and God’s perspective on it all.
Did you know he was also pursuing Catholicism? Prior to his death he had been attending mass and getting ready to convert. No joke. This man who had a heart like I find severely lacking in the Contemporary Christian Music scene, and who was called the “uneasy conscious” of CCM; who seemed to have grasped the meaning of worship, and music’s place in it better than anyone else I can think of was leaning towards Catholicism in an effort to “be closer to Jesus”.
Was he mistaken? Did he take a wrong turn? Should I disregard his music, his passion, his life? Or does it really matter…

Have you ever heard his song, “Hard to get.”
It is one of my all-time faves.
I think Rich has 3 of my top 5 all time favorites.
Hard to Get
All the way my savior leads me
Hello old friends
nothing is beyond you
surely god is with us
There are more of us (hammered dulcimer players) than you might expect! A surprising number of Christians, too.
By the way, I love the whole Jesus Record, especially the demo “side.” The songs “Jesus” and “Hard to Get” are my favorites.
