Matt’s Lo-Fi Faith

It’s meme time again!

Tagged by Yannick.

1: List three (3) words that describe your faith.

  • True
  • Tenacious
  • Imperfect (doesn’t that seem inconsistent with true?)

2: Describe a belief you are certain about and one with which you struggle.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.

I struggle with believing Jesus’s words: “I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24)

3: What is your mission in life?

To know God and do what he tells me.

4: Describe one thing that interferes with authentically living out your faith.

Left to my own devices, I am a self-centered, lying, gluttonous, hedonistic coward.

The degree to which I ignore God’s presence in my life (his spirit in me) is the degree to which I am these things.

5: What is your favorite story from the Hebrew Scriptures? Why?

David’s story. The whole thing. It gives me hope. A king/poet/warrior who screws up majorly, yet God still uses him in huge ways.

6: What is your favorite New Testament story? Why?

I continue to be inspired by Jesus’s life, challenged by his death, and changed by his resurrection.

7: Describe a meaningful action you took because of your faith.

I decided several years ago to let the mission affect my life choices (job, where I live, what I buy, etc), not let my life choices affect how I carry out the mission.

8: Does your faith differ from that of your parents? If so, how?

Yes. How is a hard question to answer. My faith is my own. My story is different from theirs. God’s plan for my life (specifically, not generally) is different from his plans from theirs. Do I have more or less? I think that is the wrong question to ask.

9: Who or what was most important in the development of your faith?

My Freshman and Sophomore years in college, in general, the experiences. Seeing the results of living for what I wanted… and then in stark contrast, the results what living for what God wants.

I’d like to hear what Nate, Pat, and Ben think.

Those are good questions! I killed my blog before it killed me, but i’ll post mine here if you don’t mind…

1: List three (3) words that describe your faith.

Stupid (has been used by others)
    Improving
    Healthy

2: Describe a belief you are certain about and one with which you struggle.

I am certain heaven is gonna be awesome.

I have a hard time believing God will help me change my heart on things. I always go back and forth in my prayers because I can’t wrap my mind around him doing that, I always feel like it’s my responsibility to like or dislike a certain part of obedience. I should probably look into that more…

3: What is your mission in life?

Specifically? To be an uncompromising man after His own heart, and to reproduce that in the lives of everyone around me.

    Generally? Matt’s wording fits best.

4: Describe one thing that interferes with authentically living out your faith.

I am a bitter jerk that would get my caustic personality all over everyone I know if I didn’t have the Holy Spirit in me. Since I’m also deeply undisciplined, I have a hard time making sure the Holy Spirit is louder than my flesh in my mind EVERY SINGLE DAY.

5: What is your favorite story from the Hebrew Scriptures? Why?

    Joshua. The perfect disciple.

6: What is your favorite New Testament story? Why?

The Passion movie has it all. I’ve only ever watched it once, because it was so deeply personal and meaningful to me. I’ve never had another opportunity to watch it again alone, and I don’t want to risk others possibly ruining the experience. Someday I definately want to watch it again, I’m just biding my time. I’m an anal jerk about movies, ask Teege or my wife.

It means so much to me because I’ve come to realize more and more in my life the amount of passion and zeal it takes to control oneself when one can and it seems like one should lash out. Jesus’ mastery of his human flesh climaxes there for the world to see for eternity, making him the most masculine, heroic, powerful man ever.

7: Describe a meaningful action you took because of your faith.

I just got done with a 40-day fast. And I freakin love eating now. If anyone ever loses the joy of eating in their life, they should try fasting for a month and a half, and everything they eat from then on will be revolutionary.

8: Does your faith differ from that of your parents? If so, how?

Yea. I haven’t been burned out enough times to have faith like theirs.

9: Who or what was most important in the development of your faith?

God’s sharp and constant discipline for more than two years after I became a disciple. There was a whole world of sin inside be that I became aware of, and I figured out that God could fix that fact. That made me into alot more of a believer.
