Far From The Cross
T.J. and Kirsten have been discussing the Rock’s vision of reaching those who are “far from the cross”, on their blogs. Great discussion. I’m linking to it here so I don’t forget to read it. :)

That is aimed at people like me… isn’t it????
Dave, I guess that is a question only you can really answer?
So… what do you think?
Also, that is one thing that doesn’t quite sit right with me and the whole “far from the cross thing” is that it has the potential of really alienting people… feeling like “we’ see “them” as lesser human beings or something.
I hope you know (from years of friendship) that this is not the case.
But still the question, are you? And if so, how do you feel about that fact? And if not, why would you think that it would include “people like you”?
Wow… kinda deep….
Where to begin….
I do not believe in the literal truth of the bible…
I have not accepted Jesus as my own personal savior…
I do believe that the teachings of the bible are very wise and mostly good and true (fact and truth being two different things in this case).
I believe that if I could lead the kind of life that Christ taught in the bible I would be a better man than I am today.
I foresee the very real possibility of becoming a regular church goer again… tho probably not in a church that preaches the literal truth of the bible.
I suppose I consider myself as far from the cross…
P.S.
Where ever his conversation leads I don’t think I would ever accuse you, or most of the Rock crowd I used to know, of seperating me into a “them” group… I know you all too well… (even tho I felt gentle “join our flock” prodding from time to time when I hung out with you all)
Others I’ve met with similar belief systems to you, on the other hand, treated me like a “them”…
Yes it has a GREAT potential to alienate others… just not me.
Question for you: If you feel this could be such a bad thing then why persue it in this fashion??? If you think it is likely to cause more harm than good, I would reccomend not doing it.
The reason I ask this is one of the nice things about the rock/stonebrook etc. for me was that when people found out I didn’t exaclty share their beliefs they would gently nudge but not beat me over the head with it (except in 6th floor discussion where it was quite…. stimulating and enjoyable).
Dave, thanks for your thoughtful response.
As for your question: it’s not the vision that i feel is harmful, it’s the wording, and really, the wording is not very useful outside the circle of the Rock leadership. I think it can be confusing and problematic if put before the public. Why did I put it there then? well… i didn’t. TJ and Kirsten did. :-P.
As far as the vision goes, I really don’t see that we have another option in response to what the bible tells us to go and do…
Love ya, dude.
:-D
