CD Review - Jars of Clay - Redemption Songs

jars-redemption.jpg

“Redemption Songs” is a collection of reinvented ancient hymns and spiritual songs reminding a new generation that they are a part of the ongoing Redemptive story.

Relatively innovative remakes of the classics. For the most part I get really excited about hymn remakes. Breathing new life into antique words/poems/songs is a passion of mine. I love to see it done well.

Honestly I liked the more “obscure” (at least to me) stuff better than some of the classics. I guess I have high expectations when it comes to tunes like “It Is Well With My Soul”. Overall a very catchy and listenable album.

Favorite track: hands down “God Will Lift Up Your Head”. It is the most radio friendly (which is always worth points in my book) and has a killer message, one that I think is very needed in our generation.

“Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder” is a nice, reflective remake of that hymn. The musical styling and pace make you actually process the lyrics, rather than just sing-song through them as can happen with hymns.

This album is definitely worth your money.

  1. God Be Merciful To Me
  2. I Need Thee Every Hour
  3. God Will Lift Up Your Head
  4. I’ll Fly Away
  5. Nothing But the Blood
  6. Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
  7. O Come and Mourn With Me Awhile
  8. Hiding Place
  9. Jesus, I Lift My Eyes
  10. It is Well With My Soul
  11. On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand
  12. Thy Lovely Source of True Delight
  13. They Will Know we are Christians by our love

I lvoe that CD. My favorites are “It is Well With My Soul” because it has that 50s rock thing going for it and “O Come and Mourn With me Awhile.”

Yeah, hymns are sweet when put to a beat. :-)
But what I’d like to hear are some Great Commission Scripture Songs put to a new sound.
    …just thought I’d share.
