One Zero (Acoustic) lets me hear Derek play familar songs a little bit differently than the album originals. It's nice to hear the different versions -- allows me to focus on the message. It also gives me an opportunity to send some money the artists way. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see Derek Webb play live; until then, this is a good record to hear one of my favorite artists.

Don

PS: Some other artists release these types of records and some of them I buy and some I avoid. To each their own; hopefully no one is being forced to buy records against their will.

MAN! All of you all need to LAY OFF D Webb!!! Pat, what is your problem man!? Comparing D Webb to U2? Metallica? I don't recall either one of them trying to get the good news of fallen man being redeemed through faith in Jesus Christ in their music! This IS NOT A BEST OF-I dont recall him ever saying it was...besides, a best of after 4 albums is not really warranted. This album is called One Zero...referring to binary code. ITs about getting back to basics and the song choices on this album take the listener on that journey...this is as much of a concept album as his other three but the songs chosen for this are more straightforward in its message...which is his intent-start conversations about our faith.

His remix is where the rub is...Will Hunt did an amazing job on the remix...bravo. As for the rest of you, quit acting like music snobs and let Derek preach the Gospel without you pointing fingers like its not a good idea.

derek IS recording a new album this month. Also, the one zero acoustic album was recorded by him at his house. I think the idea may have had something to do with a "best of" but not entirely, but if that were true, I'm not sure "medication" would fall into that category. Instead,I think this comes out of the way he does his shows these days. Just him and his acoustic guitar. That's exactly what this album is, so it could be that he's just making that feel available to the public to own.

Well, in fairness, I should point out that there have been times when I have thought that both a Lone Strangers Remix and Acoustic album would be great ideas. I am still debating a Live disc.
Kettle? I'm P(o/a)t. Nice to make your acquaintence...

It's the whole best-of thing that I have a backlash against. U2 are great artists, but U218 was an exercise in self-indulgence, as was Metallica's S&M. Were you there for the Henry Rollins tirade about that? Same for Sting making an album full of 16th century lute music. These are all great artists with the resources to produce these albums, which happened to sell plenty of copies. That does not mean that any of the albums were necessarily great ideas.
My irritation stems from a podcast that you sent me; in it, Derek was very critical, without naming names, of Christian musicians who were, to paraphrase, bad artists. He thought that they wrote generic, not-good songs, and therefore, didn't make good art. If Derek is to be held to the same standards, an acoustic best-of album is not "good" art. A new album, on the other hand...
HOWEVER, the capitalist in me understands the necessity of best-of albums. And if he'll sell a bunch, more power to him. But, as a mediocre song-writer, I'm pretty good at recognizing an effort in self-appreciation when I see one.

Maybe blog comments isn't the best place for this response, but I really don't understand the negativity here, Pat... Do I detect a little jealousy? If he has the resources to produce the album, and people will buy them, why should he NOT do it, and what is pretentious about it?

He's a solid artist. He writes really good music. People enjoy it. He's being successful at what he does. What is wrong with that?

OR has he reached the point where he can announce:
"I think it would be a great idea to release a Greatest Hits disc, except that they will all be acoustic, and therefore nothing like what made them Hits in the first place. There will be only 10 songs instead of the usual 15-18. Furthermore, I will release a second disc of REMIXES of the same 10 songs, making it available only online and therefore in inferior, compressed quality."
and his status means that no one has the guts/will to say, "Derek, this might be a little pretentious, and possibly not the best idea?"
BTW, this is known as "entering the U2/Sting/Metallica Realm."
