Recent Changes in The Rock Music Ministry
I have no picture to go with this post!! Why aren’t people taking photos at The Rock anymore??
You probably already have noticed some changes going on with the lineup of bands at The Rock on Friday night, and I wanted to take a bit and explain what’s going on.
The Lone Strangers (or one form of it or another) have been playing at The Rock for years (four years?) now, pretty much exclusively, until about a year and a half ago when we introduced “The Linden Boys”. Which was a misnomer because they weren’t all boys, nor were they all from Linden. And they did a marvelous job.
Over the last year and a half we have been rotating various musicians in and out of the new band looking to solidify it musically, and from an individual musician’s commitment/availability standpoint. And still they did a marvelous job. Dustin faithfully lead a new group of musicians into a high degree of competency and excellence in a short period of time. Then he decided to move to Mexico for a couple of semesters :) (okay, that was looming on the horizon anyway).
For a variety of reasons, it was determined that The Lone Strangers needed to stop playing at The Rock (the biggest reason is that we are old, or other factors springing from that.) With Dustin’s absence it was obvious that we were in need of more music leaders (I have no desire to go completely insane, or burn myself out.) So we made what (I feel) is going to prove a bold and wise move. We re-divided the bands. Pat Blair is leading one and I am leading the other. We are hoping to spread out our musical and worship leading experience (I’ve been leading for about 6 years, and Pat has been right next to me the whole way). The thought is that we will be able to more rapidly train new Rock music members to a degree of excellence this way.
Time will tell, but I just know that Pat’s band did an amazing job last Friday night, and practice with my new band went extremely well last night. I’m stoked. Here are the new band lineups.
Band “R”
- Matt Heerema - lead / vox / guitars / blind ambition
- Drew Van Leeuwen - guitars / tasty licks
- Ben Messer - Bass / youthful zeal
- Carrie Evenhouse - Vox / incessant cheerfulness
- Megan Blair - Keys / Violin / political commentary
- Kory Kawai - Drums and Symbols / Rock Solid Hawaiian Rhythm
Band “V”
- Pat Blair - lead / vox / guitars / musical genius
- Brandon Kleinke - Guitars / Xtreme high energy
- Dan Shea - Bass / Cool Factor
- Dan McClannahan - Drums / Travis Barker Fills
Suggestions for band names are welcome.

So… is Kory going to be flashing signs while drumming? Making neat shadow symbols on the back wall? Inquiring minds need to know what kind of symbols he’s making!
Internal Combustion Humans
Megacalories per Second
V-Force 2
AYB
Cyclenauts
… more later.

“I have no picture to go with this post!! Why aren’t people taking photos at The Rock anymore??”
Here is half a pic of Dustin with one leg shaved, if you’re still looking for an image. Hope that’s helpful.
He’s in Mexico, he can’t hurt me now.
I think I am going to take “Trial By Fury” for my band. It just seems so appropriate after last Friday.
It’s settled then. You are “Trial By Fury” and we are “Seven Ways from Sunday”
Did you mean “symbols”:
Symbols are objects, characters, figures, sounds or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. A symbol, in its basic sense, is a conventional representation of a concept; i.e., an idea, object, quality, quantity, etc. In more psychological and philosophical terms, all concepts are symbolic in nature, and representations for these concepts are simply token artifacts that are allegorical to (but do not directly codify) a symbolic meaning, or symbolism.
From the most general systemics perspective, as used on maps, a symbol is a communication means: it is a graphical, written, vocal or other physical object which, usually in a syntetic sense, is used to the representation of another, more complex, physical or abstract object, or an object property. It is also used in various metaphoric notions.
Fundamental application domain of symbols are languages, mathematics and cognitive sciences.
Spoken language, for example, consists of distinct auditory tokens for representing symbolic concepts (words), arranged in an order which further suggests their meaning.

“Cymbals”: Cymbals (Fr. cymbales; Ger. Becken; Ital. piatti or cinelli; Por. pratos), are a modern percussion instrument. Cymbals consist of thin, normally round plates of various cymbal alloys; see cymbal making for a discussion of their manufacture. Most modern cymbals are of indefinite pitch (tuned sets have been manufactured but are rare), whereas small cup-shaped cymbals based on ancient designs sound a definite note (see: crotales).
Cymbals are used in modern orchestras and many military, marching, concert and other bands. They are one of the two instrument types that form the modern drum kit, the other of course being the drum, and as such are a basic part of much contemporary music. Even the most basic drum kit normally contains at least one suspended cymbal and a pair of hi-hat cymbals.
HAHA My mom reads my blog!!
Yes, indeed, I did mean “Symbols”. It’s a reference to the band “Rush”. Neil Pert, their drummer (one of the all time great rock and roll drummers) used to sign things “Neil Pert, Drums and Symbols”.
So, that’s what I meant, indeed.
Yeah for Matt’s Mom! Best comment evar!
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
I always knew that you were a good speller.
;-D
Just because I´m not there now doesn´t mean I´m not pumping iron every day and training myself to kill when I come back. Cuidate muchacho!
What’s a tasty lick?
Don’t I get a link to my political commentary? ;)
Wow. Matt’s mom pwned my pwn comment, and didn’t even address it.
Dustin,
I can’t find a translator that will do “Cuidate muchacho!”, so I’m going to assume at this point that it means, “Just kidding, I’m a wuss!”
