With the faith of a mac user…
Well, I have officially been a Mac user for about three weeks now. I feel like I’ve been using them my whole life. It’s like I’ve been… born again… or something… :)
There is an interesting spirtual parallel here… (heheh)
This article actually does a pretty accurate job of describing the switch to a Mac. It’s a bit long, but definitely worth the read…
Macintosh: it’s not just the same crap, but different
PC users: see the light. Next time you buy a computer, get a Mac… trust me.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Macs are not for everyone. Heck, that’s the company’s marketing strategy: instead of going for a wide base of users, they are trying to be the BMW of computers. If you are infinitely wealthy and/or a geek, then you should consider a Mac. If you are on a budget, like to play the occasional game, and use your computer for surfing the ‘net and typing documents, a PC is a better, cheaper choice.
Disagree :) If you are on a budget, like to play the occasional game, and use your computer for surfing the net and typing documents, get an eMac :)
Agree though, they are primarily marketing to geeks and the fashion-conscious. Get the geek market, and you eventually will have the normal users (as the geeks religiously recommend their computer of choice to all their friends).
However, I would have to say that the Mac is indeed for everyone :)
Did you read the article though? Good stuff
I will also disagree. A while back I purchased an ibook similar to yours Matt. I was so excited to get my hands on a Mac laptop. I grew up using Macs in grade school all through high school. I even spent most of my time in design school using Macs. It was all fun and games until I was the one trying to pay for Apple versions of everything I had on my PC. I had my ibook for about 3 months and sold it on ebay–quite happy to be rid of it.
I believe it mainly comes down to budget. You pay top dollar for the perceived “Apple lifestyle”. Paying for looks, expensive components, and software made me appreciate my PC more than ever.
Will - welcome to the site :)
Software is expensive any way you shake it. Whether for PC or Mac. The nice thing about mac is that it supports a heck of a lot of freeware/open source/linux stuff now! Another reason most geeks are switching ;)
Ahh… the Apple lifestyle. sigh
keep the persecution comin! This is fun ;)
It’s not persecution, it’s just that, contrary to what you have recently come to believe, Mac is not for everyone - BY DESIGN. You don’t realize this because you are a geek (not an insult), and it doesn’t occur to you that my family trying to use open source/linux stuff is a ridiculous idea. And you can’t tell me that there is more/better freeware for Mac than PC.
In fact, I have come to the belief that you are closing your eyes to some of Mac’s “crap” as well, for example, Itunes. It is a slow, bloated, user-unfriendly piece of software, especially when all the user wants is a media player. And it’s gotta be hard to rant about technilogical superiority when, if your company had their way, we’d all still be using 1-button mouses. Er, mice. Meece? Oh, nevermind.
Anyway, I’m enjoying watching you enjoy your new toy. I have seen you on kicks like this before. Like when you got your last laptop. While I have no doubt that a Mac is a better choice for you right now, I am sure that it is only a matter of time before you come down from your “new toy” high and realize that it’s not for everyone.
Perhaps I’m behind the times but this is worth checking out for all who are in doubt about the betterment of mankind (and womankind) through mac computing.
Follow your heart. Switch.
I’ve always been a PC person, although I admit that technological literacy towards PCs was a long road when I hopped on my first computer. When I started using the newer Macs, I found them to be a lot more friendly of interfaces than older versions of the OS. I’d say Mac has come much further in the past ten years than Windows has, though.
I say, that, becoming technologically literate is just as long a road whether you start on a PC or Mac… but, when you go to change, or have to occasionally use the computer you’re not used to, it’s now an easier transition than it used to be.
I’ve been loyal to the Windows machine with my first two computers. Ask me again when I go to get my next new computer in five years– we’ll see how things are then.

iTunes? Crap? Hrm. I suppose I’m brainwashed too. I didn’t like it at first. It was different. It wasn’t Winamp/XMMS. Therefore I didn’t use it. Then, I got a great deal on an iPod, started using iTunes, and suddenly, I use it regularly.
If your ID3 tags are a hash, iTunes is a pain. That’s a given. However, once they’re lined up, it’s really nice. Also, things like the LAN music sharing are really, really nice. For instance, I’m at home right now. I turn on my Powerbook in the other room, but I’m working on redoing some stuff on the Windows machines in the office. Start iTunes, select my music share, listen to my music. No screwing around with music shares or such, just “click, click, click, listen.”

Did you see the ruckus you caused on my site? Shame on you.
Hehe… sorry about that Noel. Allow me to replicate my reply on your site here…
